ENERES was selected as a cooperating company in the “FY2023 Survey and Study Project on Digital Technology Utilization for the J-Credit Scheme,” commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment to Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting LLC. ENERES aims to simplify J-Credit creation using digital technology to effectively utilize environmental value produced by households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The J-Credit Scheme is a system jointly operated by the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, where the Japanese government certifies GHG emission reductions and CO2 absorption as “credits.” J-Credits can be created through various GHG reduction efforts, such as introducing energy-efficient equipment or renewable energy. It represents a form of “carbon pricing” designed to drive behavioral change by putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2.

Unlike Non-Fossil Certificates, which are issued in connection with power generation, households and businesses also have opportunities to generate J-Credits. However, obtaining J-Credit certification requires registration, application, and other procedures, and it is difficult to generate emission reductions on a scale large enough to provide tangible financial benefits. As a result, J-Credits have not yet gained widespread adoption among households and SMEs.

This demonstration project by the Ministry of the Environment aims to build a system that enables easy J-Credit creation through digital technologies, fostering an environment for broader adoption.

ENERES develops and provides various solutions that contribute to carbon neutrality, leveraging digital technologies such as IoT and blockchain. In this demonstration project, leveraging its position as an aggregator connected to electricity consumption and control data from households, SMEs, and third-party ownership (TPO) operators, ENERES will take on the challenge of simplifying, via blockchain, the recording and consolidation of renewable energy self-consumption data and J-Credit procedures.

Through this demonstration, ENERES aims to contribute to the widespread adoption of J-Credits, the enhancement of the value and wider adoption of renewable energy, and ultimately, the realization of carbon neutrality.
